Subhadra lived in a small house in Vadnagar. When she saw Anand standing outside her house with his bowl, something changed inside her. She felt drawn to him, though she didn’t fully understand why.
Her mother came out and gave Anand food. She noticed his kindness and good behavior and gave him more food than usual. Anand thanked her and left peacefully.
After he went away, Subhadra kept thinking about him.
The next day, Subhadra saw Anand again in the market. He was speaking gently to people and answering their questions. She followed him quietly for some distance.
When Anand noticed her, he stopped and asked if she needed help. Subhadra invited him to eat at her house. Anand agreed politely and said he would come.
That night, Subhadra could not sleep. She kept thinking about Anand. She imagined a future with him. She believed what she felt was love.
After some days, Subhadra told her mother that she wanted to marry Anand. Her mother refused. She explained that Anand was a monk and could not marry.
Subhadra did not accept this. She requested again and again. Each time, her mother said no.
Slowly, Subhadra became very upset. One day, she cried loudly and lay on the ground, saying she would die if she could not marry Anand. Her mother became afraid and finally agreed, not because she believed it was right, but because she feared losing her daughter .
The next day, Anand came to their house for food. After eating, he stood up to wash his hands. At that moment, Subhadra’s mother closed the door.
She demanded that Anand marry her daughter. Anand calmly refused and said he was a monk. The mother insisted and said her daughter would die if he did not agree.
Anand felt trapped. He finally said that if Buddha allowed it, he would agree.
They went to Buddha and explained everything.Buddha Asks Simple but Deep Questions . Buddha listened carefully. Then he asked Subhadra one question.
“Do you love Anand?”
Subhadra said yes. She said she loved his body, his voice, his behavior, and his mind.
Buddha then asked her more questions. He asked whether she loved the dirt inside Anand’s nose, the waste inside his body, the bacteria, the aging body, and all the parts people usually ignore.
Subhadra stayed silent.
She realized something important. She did not love Anand completely. She was only attracted to his outer appearance and the image she had created in her mind.
The Difference Between Love and Attraction
Buddha explained that attraction focuses on selected things we like. Love accepts the full reality of a person. What Subhadra felt was attraction, not true love.
Attraction feels very strong, especially during teenage years, because emotions grow faster than understanding. This is natural, but it can confuse the mind.
Subhadra understood this clearly.
Subhadra’s New Decision
After realizing the truth, Subhadra chose a different path. She became a nun and followed Buddha’s teachings. This decision came from understanding, not sadness.
She found peace within herself.
Anand continued his life as a monk.
